Stanley Bus Station is set for a major transformation after securing £2.5 million in funding from the North East Combined Authority.
The investment follows a successful bid by Durham County Council and will deliver a series of improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility, safety and the overall passenger experience.
According to the official press release , the funding will support a comprehensive redesign of the station, both inside and out.
A More Welcoming Entrance
The station’s main entrance will be completely redesigned to create a more open and inviting feel. Plans also include reducing areas for congregation, helping to support the wider town centre and nearby businesses.
This approach is intended not only to improve the passenger experience but also to contribute positively to Stanley’s local economy.
Improved Accessibility and Facilities
A range of upgrades will make the station more accessible for all users:
- Enhanced digital and interactive passenger information displays
- A new seating layout with a designated wheelchair area
- Fully refurbished toilet facilities with improved disabled access
- New flooring to assist passengers with visual impairments
- Widened external footpath links to support those with mobility issues
These improvements are designed to ensure more passengers can use the station comfortably and confidently.
Boosting Safety and Security
Safety has been placed at the heart of the redevelopment. The project includes new lighting and CCTV installations to create a more secure environment and help reduce anti-social behaviour.
During the winter consultation period, council officers gathered feedback from station users. A total of 118 people completed questionnaires in person, with a further 65 responding online. Around 85 per cent agreed that the proposed plans would create a safer and more welcoming station .

“We are pleased to receive this funding from the North East CA. It will go a long way to helping us bring vital improvements to Stanley Bus Station so it can better serve residents and visitors.
“These works will bring improved safety and better accessibility meaning more passengers will be able to use the station more easily.”

“I want local people to have public transport that is affordable, safe and accessible to all, which is why we are spending £2.5 million on making Stanley Bus Station a better and brighter place to start your journey. That’s good news not just for bus passengers, but the whole town centre and its shops and cafes.
“This investment in the future of Stanley comes alongside our Mayor’s Fares promise – which means you will pay no more than £2.50 to catch a bus, and only £1 if you are aged 21 or under.”
Timeline for Completion
The project is expected to be fully delivered by Spring 2027. It will align with the wider objectives of the Bus Station Improvement Plan, the Local Transport Plan and the North East Combined Authority’s broader investment priorities .
For Stanley residents and visitors alike, the revamp promises a safer, more accessible and more modern gateway to the town.
