There’s No Place Like Beamish Primary School as Historic School Celebrates 115 Years

A County Durham primary school which has celebrated its 115th birthday this year is opening its doors to local families as it looks to share one of the area’s best-kept secrets.

Beamish Primary School, which has been at the heart of its local community for more than a century, will hold a Stay & Play session on Friday, 16th October at 2.15 pm, giving families the opportunity to visit the school, meet staff and get a taste of school life.

Located in the appropriately named village of No Place, the school has adopted a fitting phrase as it celebrates its history and looks towards its future: “There’s No Place like Beamish Primary School.”

It is a playful nod to Dorothy’s famous journey in The Wizard of Oz, but also reflects the school’s pride in the community it has served for 115 years.

Having marked its milestone birthday in 2026, the school is keen to celebrate not only its history but what Beamish Primary School offers children today.

Despite being a small primary school, Beamish benefits from expansive indoor and outdoor spaces, with extensive grounds giving pupils plenty of room for play, exploration and learning outside the classroom.

Its small class sizes are another important part of school life. Teachers are able to get to know pupils as individuals, recognise their strengths and provide tailored support where it is needed.

The combination of a close-knit school community and generous facilities is something staff are keen for more families in No Place and the surrounding villages to discover.

The Stay & Play is part of the school’s efforts to open its doors to the wider community and allow parents and carers to experience the school for themselves.

After 115 years, generations of local children have passed through the doors of Beamish Primary School. Now the school hopes a new generation of families will come along and discover what has been hiding on their doorstep.

And while there will be no need for ruby slippers or a journey along the yellow brick road, visitors may just discover that there really is No Place like Beamish Primary School.

The Beamish Primary School Stay & Play takes place on Friday, 16th October at 2.15 pm and is open to all families interested in finding out more about the school.
